Like Floating in Air: The 10 Clearest Lakes on Earth

Imagine watching a rowing boat glide across a lake and realising, with a slight jolt, that you cannot see the water beneath it. 

The hull appears to float in mid-air, suspended over a perfectly visible rocky floor ten metres below. This is not a trick of light. This is what water looks like when it is almost indistinguishable from nothing at all.

The lakes on this list represent the outer limits of what nature can filter, protect, and preserve. Some are sacred. Some are volcanic. Some are buried underground in limestone caverns where ancient myths still echo. All of them will make you look twice.

#1. Rotomairewhenua / Blue Lake – New Zealand

Location: Nelson Lakes National Park, South Island 

Visibility: 70-80 metres 

Status: Sacred Māori site – swimming strictly prohibited

This is the undisputed world champion. Scientific tests carried out in 2011 by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research showed Blue Lake to be the clearest natural body of fresh water ever measured, with visibility of up to 80 metres – almost as optically clear as distilled water. 

For context, the theoretical limit of distilled water itself is approximately 80 metres. Rotomairewhenua is essentially touching the ceiling of what physics allows. 

The lake is spring-fed from neighbouring glacial Lake Constance, and the water passes through a natural debris dam formed long ago by a landslide. 

This acts as a natural filter that retains nearly all the particles suspended in the glacial water. The result is a blue-violet colour seen only in the very clearest natural waters – a hue that photographs struggle to capture accurately.  

The lake is sacred to the Ngāti Apa, the local Māori tribe, who named it Rotomairewhenua, meaning “the lake of peaceful lands.” 

It became a sacred place where they cleansed the bones of the dead, believing this would secure the spirit a safe journey to the ancestral Māori homeland of Hawaiki. 

Swimming is forbidden – not merely discouraged, but prohibited. You may stand on the shore and look. That, it turns out, is more than enough.

#2 – Lake Baikal – Russia

Location: Siberia, southern Russia 

Visibility: Up to 40 metres (spring conditions) 

Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site – deepest lake on Earth

Baikal holds records that no other lake on Earth can touch: the deepest (1,642 metres), the oldest (25-30 million years), and the holder of approximately 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water. 

In spring, when winter ice has just melted and before algae begin their seasonal growth, the water achieves a clarity that allows you to see the rocks and fish on the bottom as if observing them through glass rather than water.

What makes Baikal’s clarity remarkable given its scale is the lake’s unique ecosystem. An extraordinary density of endemic species – including the Baikal seal, found nowhere else on Earth – continuously filter the water. The lake has been cleaning itself biologically for millions of years.

In winter, the surface freezes to a thickness of up to two metres, forming ice so clear that you can stand on it and watch the world below continue its life, entirely undisturbed, 40 metres beneath your feet.

#3 – Melissani Cave Lake – Greece

Location: Kefalonia, Ionian Islands 

Visibility: 10-30 metres (brackish water) 

Status: Archaeological site – boat access only, swimming prohibited

Melissani Cave is one of the most cinematic landscapes in the Mediterranean – a cavernous sinkhole where a collapsed roof allows shafts of sunlight to dance across a subterranean lake of impossibly vivid turquoise.  

The cave was rediscovered in 1951. During the first exploration, an ancient lamp was found, and a 1962 excavation produced relics of a former Minoan culture – oil lamps, clay plates, and figures of the god Pan and several nymphs. Legend holds that the nymph Melissanthi drowned herself in the lake when Pan rejected her love.  

When the sun is right overhead at noon, the sunlight hitting the turquoise-blue waters creates a magical illusion and the whole cave suddenly feels lit with blue light. Slanting rays in the morning and evening create an ethereal feeling of boats hovering in the light. 

The lake within Melissani Cave can reach depths of up to 30 metres. It was formed by a geological process where water dissolved limestone rocks over a long time, creating an underground space, part of whose roof later fell in. 

The brackish water – a mixture of fresh spring water and seawater filtering through underground channels – contributes to the extraordinary clarity. Visit at noon. The difference between midday and any other hour is the difference between spectacular and merely beautiful. 

#4 – Crater Lake – USA

Location: Oregon, Cascade Range 

Visibility: 30-43 metres (record: 43.5 metres in 1997) 

Status: National Park – deepest lake in the United States

Crater Lake is fed solely by rain and snow – there is not a single river, stream, or inlet carrying sediment, pollutants, or algae into it. It is considered the cleanest and clearest large body of water in the world, according to the National Park Service.  

The origin story is everything. Around 7,700 years ago, Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed, forming the caldera that now holds the lake. That dramatic origin created a natural basin untouched by industrial activity or agricultural runoff. 

With no external water sources introducing organic material or sediment, and with strong UV light penetrating the clear water to suppress even plankton growth, the lake has been filtering itself into near-perfection for nearly eight millennia.

The lake holds the world record for the deepest Secchi disk visibility reading on Earth: 143 feet (43.5 metres), recorded in 1997. Annual visibility tests typically register between 100 and 120 feet.  

The colour – a deep, almost electric sapphire – is not a trick of the sky’s reflection. It is the pure blue of water itself, visible only when every particle of interference has been removed.

#5 – Plitvice Lakes – Croatia

Location: Lika region, central Croatia 

Visibility: 5-15 metres (varies by lake) 

Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site – swimming prohibited

Croatia’s most visited natural site is a cascade of 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, each slightly different in shade – from emerald green to cobalt blue to turquoise – depending on the minerals, organisms, and depth of each individual basin. 

The water’s extraordinary clarity is a product of travertine: a limestone mineral deposited by the water itself, which continually builds new natural dams and filters sediment in the process.

The effect of looking down into Plitvice’s shallower sections is of peering into an illuminated aquarium. Every submerged branch, every pebble, every slow-moving fish is perfectly visible. 

The boardwalks that traverse the park pass directly over sections of water so clear that visitors routinely stop mid-stride to look down in disbelief. Go in spring, when snowmelt swells the waterfalls and the morning light is at its most extraordinary.

#6 – Lake Mashu – Japan

Location: Hokkaido, northern Japan 

Visibility: Up to 41 metres (historic record) 

Status: National Park – access from observation decks only

Lake Mashu is Japan’s entry in the global clarity competition – and it has historically been a serious contender for the world record. 

Formed in the caldera of a dormant volcano on the island of Hokkaido, the lake has no rivers flowing in or out, no human settlements on its shores, and no road access to the water’s edge. Visitors observe it entirely from observation platforms cut into the crater rim above. 

The combination of volcanic isolation, no external water sources, and the extreme low temperatures of northern Japan – which suppress biological activity and keep the water chemically pristine – gives Mashu a deep, dark blue that locals describe as Mashu Blue: an unofficial colour category invented specifically for a lake that does not quite match anything else.

On clear days, the water is so still and the clarity so complete that the rim of the crater reflects in the surface, creating the impression of a perfectly sealed world below the mountain.

#7 – Lake Tahoe – USA

Location: Sierra Nevada, California/Nevada border 

Visibility: 21-26 metres (current); historic peak: 31 metres 

Status: Active environmental protection programme – “Keep Tahoe Blue”

At an elevation of 1,897 metres, straddling the border between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the most studied bodies of water in North America – precisely because its clarity has been declining, and an entire movement has mobilised to stop it.

The Keep Tahoe Blue campaign, running for decades and supported by environmental organisations, government agencies, and local communities, represents one of the most sustained lake conservation efforts in the world. 

It exists because Tahoe’s clarity is measurably recoverable: strict controls on development, invasive species management, and reduction of nitrogen runoff have stabilised and partially reversed a decline that threatened to permanently alter the lake’s famous transparency.

On a clear summer morning, standing on the shore at South Lake Tahoe and looking down, the gravelly bottom is visible at depths that make the eye recalibrate its understanding of distance. The water is not simply clear. It is cold, deep, and dimensionless – a blue that functions less like colour and more like depth itself.

#8 – Jiuzhaigou Five-Colour Lake – China

Location: Sichuan Province, southwestern China 

Visibility: Near-total in shallow sections 

Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site – swimming strictly prohibited

Jiuzhaigou Valley – the Valley of Nine Villages – is a series of interconnected lakes, waterfalls, and forests in the mountains of Sichuan that collectively represent one of the most visually extraordinary natural environments in Asia. 

The Five-Colour Lake (Wucai Chi) within the valley takes its name from the simultaneous presence of deep blue, green, turquoise, yellow, and white within a single body of water, created by dissolved calcium carbonate, algae, and aquatic plants distributed across different depths.

The water is so clear that the multicoloured bottom – mineral deposits layered over millennia – is visible in its entirety from the surface, creating an effect that functions more like looking at a painting than a lake. Ancient fallen trees lie visible on the bottom, perfectly preserved by the cold, mineral-rich water, some of them centuries old.

The valley was severely damaged by an earthquake in 2017 and remained closed for restoration. It has since reopened, but access is more controlled than before – which, paradoxically, has further reduced the sediment and human impact that briefly threatened the water’s clarity.

#9 – Glacier-Fed Lakes of Glacier National Park – USA (Lake McDonald)

Location: Montana, northwestern USA 

Visibility: 10-20 metres 

Status: National Park – swimming permitted in designated areas

Lake McDonald is famous for something specific that every travel photograph of it attempts to capture: the coloured pebbles on its floor, visible through the water in vivid reds, greens, blues, and greys, polished and sorted by glacial action over thousands of years and now lying in perfect, undisturbed clarity beneath a surface that barely acknowledges it exists.

The pebbles’ colours come from minerals deposited during different geological periods of the Rocky Mountains’ formation. 

Under normal lake conditions, they would be invisible – obscured by sediment, algae, and turbidity. Under McDonald’s glacier-melt water, cold and almost biologically inert, they are as visible as objects in a museum display case.

The lake is long, narrow, and surrounded by peaks that reflect in its surface on calm mornings. It is not the world’s clearest lake by scientific measurement. 

It is, arguably, the world’s most photographically clear – the place where clarity translates most directly into something a camera can actually show.

#10 – Lake Como – Italy

Location: Lombardy, northern Italy 

Visibility: 10-20 metres (northern sections near Lecco) 

Status: No swimming restrictions – some sections designated for swimming

Lake Como’s famous clarity is, like Lake Tahoe’s, a story with complications. The southern, most visited sections of the lake – where the grand villas line the shore, where the ferries run, and where the tourists concentrate – carry the turbidity of a heavily used waterway. 

The northern arms of the lake, particularly the eastern branch toward Lecco and the quieter shorelines above Menaggio, are where the water opens up into something genuinely remarkable.

Fed by Alpine streams that tumble down from peaks above 2,000 metres, filtered through mountain geology before entering the lake, and deepened by a glacial basin that reaches 425 metres at its lowest point, the clearer sections of Como have a transparency that transforms snorkelling from a recreational activity into something closer to flight – the sensation of hovering in blue space, with the rocky floor visible far below and the mountains visible above, with nothing between you and both horizons but cold, clear Alpine water.

The Last Word

Each of these lakes exists because something prevented contamination: a lava collapse sealed out rivers, a landslide created a perfect filter, a sacred prohibition kept human beings at a respectful distance, or geology produced an environment so cold and mineral-rich that life itself could barely take hold.

They are reminders that water’s natural state, before human activity introduces its complications, is not murky or green or grey. It is this: a medium so transparent that the boundary between looking through it and not seeing it at all becomes genuinely difficult to locate.

The question is not which of these lakes you would visit first. The question is what you would think, standing at the edge of one, watching a boat hover apparently unsupported in mid-air above a rocky floor fifteen metres down. The answer, most visitors report, is that you would stand there for longer than you planned.
