As of January 19, 2026, Spain has officially rolled out its groundbreaking nationwide transport pass, dubbed the “Bono Único.”

For just €60 per month (or €30 for travelers under 26), residents and visitors alike can enjoy unlimited travel on all Renfe commuter (Cercanías) and medium-distance regional trains, as well as state-operated intercity buses across the country.

This initiative aims to make Spain one of the most affordable and accessible countries for public transport in Europe, promoting sustainable mobility and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

What’s Included?

The pass covers most everyday rail and bus journeys, including:

– Commuter trains (Cercanías): Ideal for daily commuters in and around major cities;

– Medium-distance regional trains: Connecting towns and cities within Spain’s 17 regions;

– State-operated intercity buses: Facilitating travel between regions and rural areas.

What’s Not Included?

– High-speed trains (AVE): Long-distance, high-speed services remain outside the scheme;

– Local metros, trams, and city buses: Coverage depends on regional agreements, as these services are managed by local governments.

Why Does It Matter?

The introduction of the €60 pass is expected to slash monthly transport costs by up to 60% for regular users, such as workers commuting between cities like Vigo and Santiago, or Jerez and Seville.

The government estimates that around two million people will benefit from the pass, making it a transformative measure for both locals and expats.

A Step Toward Sustainable Travel

Inspired by similar schemes in Germany and Austria, Spain’s new pass is part of a broader effort to encourage public transport use, reduce carbon emissions, and make travel more affordable for all.

The pass runs alongside existing regional discounts, ensuring a smooth transition and expanded access.

How to Get It?

The pass is available for purchase nationwide from January 19, 2026. Travelers can buy it online or at designated transport hubs, with the option for automatic monthly renewal.

While the pass currently excludes some local and high-speed services, there are plans to expand coverage through regional agreements in the future.

For now, it stands as a bold step toward making Spain’s public transport network more unified, affordable, and user-friendly.
