Powerful ocean swells generated thousands of miles away battered Hawaii’s southern shores over the past week, producing some of the largest wave conditions seen in decades and sending seawater crashing into coastal homes, condominiums, roads, and businesses.
Dramatic videos shared across social media showed towering waves surging over oceanfront buildings on Hawaii’s Big Island, with water washing across rooftops, ripping away shingles, and flooding residential areas.
In several locations, waves appeared to engulf entire structures, prompting comparisons to historic surf events rarely witnessed in modern times.
The most severe impacts were reported along south-facing coastlines, particularly on the Kona Coast of the Big Island and portions of Maui and Oahu.
Authorities issued High Surf Warnings and Coastal Flood Statements as wave run-up repeatedly pushed seawater well beyond normal shorelines.
According to the National Weather Service, the event was caused by an unusually powerful south-southwest swell generated by intense storm activity deep in the South Pacific Ocean. Long-period swell energy traveled thousands of kilometers across the Pacific before reaching Hawaii, where it combined with seasonal king tides to produce exceptionally high water levels and destructive wave impacts.
Forecasters reported surf heights of 10 to 15 feet along exposed south shores, while individual wave faces and wave run-up in some locations were estimated to reach 20 to 25 feet. The combination of large swell energy and elevated tides allowed waves to surge far inland, overtopping seawalls and flooding normally protected coastal properties.
Meteorologists noted that while Hawaii regularly experiences powerful winter surf from North Pacific storms, major south-shore events of this magnitude are considerably less common. Local weather officials and longtime residents described the June 2026 swell as one of the most significant south-shore wave events in decades.
The most widely shared footage came from the Keauhou-Kona area on the Big Island, where a massive wave crashed over an oceanfront condominium complex.
Witnesses reported roof damage and extensive flooding as whitewater poured through the property.
Similar scenes were observed elsewhere along Hawaii’s southern coastline, where roads, parking areas, and beachfront infrastructure were temporarily inundated.
Experts explained that the event was not a tsunami. Instead, it resulted from long-period swell generated by distant storms.
Unlike tsunamis, which are typically triggered by earthquakes or underwater landslides, ocean swells are produced by strong winds acting on the sea surface over large areas and extended periods.
When such swells arrive during periods of unusually high tides, their impacts can be significantly amplified.
Scientists have also noted that rising sea levels increase the vulnerability of Hawaii’s coastal communities to extreme wave events.
Higher baseline ocean levels allow wave energy to penetrate farther inland, increasing the likelihood of flooding and damage during major swell episodes.
Although no widespread serious injuries were reported, authorities urged residents and visitors to remain away from shorelines during the peak of the event due to dangerous currents, unpredictable wave surges, and the risk of coastal flooding.
The swell has since begun to subside, but coastal officials continue to assess damage to infrastructure and private property.
For many residents, the images of waves washing over homes and buildings will remain a striking reminder of the power of the Pacific Ocean and the growing challenges facing vulnerable coastlines.
