When researchers want to know which destination is objectively the most stunning, they no longer rely on travel surveys or Instagram likes. They look at the human brain – or more specifically, at the human eye.
In a study conducted by Premier Inn and reported by Euronews Travel, researchers used eye-tracking technology to analyze how people visually process summer images of more than 60 iconic cities across the globe.
By tracking two key biometric metrics – how quickly a city caught a viewer’s attention and how many seconds their gaze stayed fixed on it – the study compiled a definitive ranking of the world’s most eye-catching places.
The winner was not Paris, Positano, or Kyoto. Taking the top spot with a score of 96 out of 100 was Banff, a small alpine town nestled deep within the Canadian Rockies.
The Science of Visual Attraction

Participants spent an average of 3.2 seconds gazing at images of Banff – the longest duration recorded for any destination in the entire study.
Why does a small town of roughly 8,000 residents outshine global metropolises? Scientists point to a rare combination of visual triggers:
- High-Contrast Geometry: Banff’s main street (Banff Avenue) creates a natural vanishing point. The rustic, timbered architecture lining the avenue acts as a visual frame that leads the eye directly toward the massive, vertical face of Cascade Mountain rising behind it.
- The “Saturated Palette” Effect: The human eye is naturally drawn to high contrast. Banff offers a vivid tri-color balance: deep green pine forests, grey limestone peaks, and the almost unnatural turquoise-blue of nearby glacial lakes like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.
The Top 10 Most Beautiful Summer Destinations (Ranked by Eye-Tracking)
While Canada claimed the top spot, European and coastal destinations dominated the rest of the list:
- Banff, Canada (96.0/100): Longest gaze time (3.2 seconds) thanks to its mountain-framed cityscape.
- Mykonos, Greece (87.3/100): Captured attention faster than any other city – noticed in just 1.5 seconds due to its iconic white-and-blue Aegean palette.
- Sydney, Australia (85.6/100): Praised for its dramatic harbor geography and vibrant urban beaches.
- Bruges, Belgium (84.1/100): A fairytale grid of canals and medieval gabled architecture.
- Bristol, UK (83.7/100): Famous for its colorful waterfront townhouses and rolling harbor views.
- Palma de Mallorca, Spain (79.7/100)
- Kyoto, Japan (78.0/100)
- Kotor, Montenegro (77.9/100)
- Auckland, New Zealand (77.6/100)
- Los Angeles, USA (73.6/100)
More Than Just a Pretty Picture

What makes Banff unique is that its status as an urban center is secondary to its environment. Unlike dense European capitals, Banff sits entirely inside Banff National Park – Canada’s oldest national park, established in 1885.
Building height limits and strict environmental laws ensure that the surrounding wilderness constantly threatens to spill into the town center.
It is one of the few places on Earth where you can drink specialty coffee on a paved sidewalk while a grizzly bear or an elk wanders through the tree line just a few hundred meters away.
The eye-tracking study proves a simple truth: when given a choice between human architecture alone and architecture framed by raw nature, the human eye will always choose the mountains.
