Australians planning trips to Europe this summer are being advised to prepare for significant airport delays, with long queues, flight disruptions, and extended waiting times expected at several major travel hubs.

The warning comes as millions of travelers head overseas during the peak holiday season, placing increased pressure on European airports already dealing with high passenger volumes and operational challenges.

Travel experts recommend that passengers arrive at airports well in advance of their scheduled departure times, monitor flight updates regularly, and allow extra time for security screening, passport control, and baggage handling.

Some of Europe’s busiest airports are expected to experience the greatest congestion, particularly during weekends and holiday periods. Delays may also affect connecting flights, increasing the likelihood of missed connections and longer travel times.

Airlines are encouraging travelers to check in online where possible, travel with carry-on luggage if practical, and ensure travel insurance covers potential delays or missed flights.

Authorities emphasize that while airports continue to work on improving passenger flow, travelers should remain patient and stay informed through their airline and airport notifications.

As the busy summer travel season continues, passengers are advised to plan ahead and expect longer-than-usual waiting times at many European airports.

For 2026, EU countries are expected to welcome at least 530 million international visitors – a staggering figure that means at least 1 in every 16 people on Earth will visit Europe this year.
