January 5, 2026 – This year’s holiday season has seen a notable surge in Chinese travelers choosing to spend Christmas and New Year abroad, marking one of the strongest rebounds in outbound travel since international restrictions were lifted.

According to data from Trip.com Group, one of China’s largest travel platforms, outbound travel bookings during the 2025-2026 holiday period increased by more than 130% year-on-year, reaching approximately 70-75% of pre-pandemic levels.

The data highlights a clear recovery in international travel demand, with nearby Asian destinations benefiting the most.

Among those destinations, Japan and Thailand have emerged as the leading choices for Chinese travelers during the festive season, driven by short flight times, convenient entry conditions, and strong shopping and leisure appeal.

A Strong Rebound in Chinese Outbound Travel

Travel analysts note that the current surge reflects growing consumer confidence and a renewed appetite for international experiences among Chinese travelers.

While long-haul travel to Europe and North America continues to recover gradually, short- and medium-haul destinations in East and Southeast Asia dominate holiday travel choices.

According to the China Tourism Academy, more than 65% of Chinese outbound trips during the winter season are to destinations within a four-hour flight radius, underscoring the importance of convenience and accessibility in travel planning.

Many travelers are also combining year-end holidays with extended leave, turning Christmas and New Year into longer international trips.

Why Japan Is Leading the Way

Japan has once again become a top destination thanks to its proximity, efficient transport connections, and world-class shopping opportunities. Cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka are especially popular during the winter holidays.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), Chinese arrivals to Japan more than doubled in 2025 compared to the previous year, making China one of Japan’s fastest-growing source markets.

The weak yen has further boosted Japan’s appeal, making shopping, dining, and accommodation noticeably more affordable for overseas visitors.

Winter illuminations, seasonal events, hot spring resorts, and year-end sales have added to Japan’s attractiveness, particularly for travelers seeking a festive urban atmosphere combined with cultural experiences.

Thailand Remains a Winter Favorite

Thailand continues to benefit from its reputation as an easy and welcoming destination for Chinese travelers. Direct flights from major Chinese cities, a visa-free entry policy for Chinese passport holders, and warm weather during the winter months have all contributed to strong demand.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), China returned as Thailand’s largest source market in late 2025, with Chinese arrivals rising by over 90% year-on-year during peak holiday periods.

Popular destinations include Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, offering a mix of shopping, beaches, cultural attractions, and large-scale New Year celebrations.

For many travelers, Thailand represents a relaxed and sun-filled alternative to colder winter destinations closer to home.

Shopping, Convenience, and Short Travel Times Drive Demand

Industry experts highlight several common factors behind the surge in Chinese holiday travel. Travelers increasingly prioritize short flight durations, frequent direct connections, competitive shopping prices, and well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Japan and Thailand score highly on all these points, making them particularly attractive for families, couples, and first-time overseas travelers who want international experiences without the challenges of long-haul travel.

Broader Impact on Regional Tourism

The rise in Chinese holiday travel is providing a significant boost to tourism economies across Asia. Hotels, airlines, retail businesses, and tour operators in popular destinations are reporting higher occupancy rates and stronger year-end revenues.

Tourism authorities in both Japan and Thailand have stepped up marketing efforts in China, promoting winter travel experiences, seasonal shopping campaigns, and cultural events specifically tailored to Chinese visitors.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Industry forecasts suggest that Chinese outbound travel will continue to grow throughout 2026, with holiday periods playing an increasingly important role in travel planning.

As air capacity expands and traveler confidence strengthens, destinations offering a balance of accessibility, affordability, and memorable experiences are expected to remain at the top of Chinese travelers’ wish lists.

For now, this year’s festive season confirms a clear trend: Chinese travelers are once again shaping global travel flows, and nearby Asian destinations, particularly Japan and Thailand, are among the biggest beneficiaries.
