Powerful Double Earthquake Strikes Venezuela, Leaving Widespread Destruction

June 24, 2026 – Venezuela has been struck by one of the strongest and most destructive earthquakes in its modern history after two powerful seismic events rocked the country’s northern and central regions within less than a minute.

According to preliminary reports, the first earthquake measured magnitude 7.2, followed just 40 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 quake, creating what seismologists describe as a “doublet earthquake.” The epicenter was located between San Felipe, in Yaracuy State, and Morón along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast.

The powerful shaking was felt across much of northern Venezuela, including the capital, Caracas, where numerous buildings suffered extensive structural damage. Several high-rise residential buildings partially or completely collapsed, while roads, bridges, and public infrastructure sustained significant damage.

Authorities have confirmed that at least 188 people have lost their lives, while over 1,520 others have been injured. Rescue teams continue searching through the rubble for survivors as emergency services work around the clock in the hardest-hit areas. 

The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency, deploying military units and civil protection teams to assist with rescue operations and humanitarian relief.

Hospitals in several affected cities have been overwhelmed by the large number of casualties, while thousands of residents have been forced to spend the night outdoors due to fears of powerful aftershocks. Emergency shelters have been established to accommodate displaced families.

Venezuela’s Seismic Risk

Although earthquakes are relatively common in Venezuela, events exceeding magnitude 7.0 occur only rarely – typically once every several decades. 

Seismologists have described the June 2026 earthquake sequence as the strongest to strike the country in more than a century.

The nation regularly experiences moderate seismic activity. In September 2025, earthquakes measuring 6.2 and 6.3 caused localized damage but were far less destructive than the current disaster. 

Historically, Caracas suffered devastating earthquakes in 1812 (estimated magnitude 7.7) and again in 1967 (magnitude 6.6), both of which caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

Why Is Venezuela So Earthquake-Prone?

Venezuela’s geography places it in one of the most seismically active regions of northern South America. The country’s entire northern coastline lies along the boundary between the South American Plate and the Caribbean Plate.

The Caribbean Plate moves eastward relative to the South American Plate, creating intense tectonic stress along several major active fault systems that pass directly through densely populated regions. These include:

  • The Boconó Fault, running through the Andes in western Venezuela.
  • The San Sebastián Fault, crossing the central Caribbean coast near Caracas.
  • The El Pilar Fault, located in eastern Venezuela.

The June 2026 earthquake occurred along this transform fault system, where tectonic stress had accumulated over many years before being released suddenly. 

Because more than 80% of Venezuela’s population lives in the country’s northern coastal and mountainous regions, seismic hazards remain exceptionally high, making major earthquakes one of the country’s most significant natural threats.

As rescue efforts continue, authorities warn that strong aftershocks remain possible in the coming days, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow emergency safety instructions.
