June 3, 2026 – A powerful tropical storm, Jangmi (Typhoon No. 6), has swept across Japan’s southern island chain of Okinawa, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, dangerous waves, and travel disruptions. Meteorologists warn that the system could continue affecting large parts of Japan as it moves northeastward.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Jangmi developed over the western Pacific and intensified while approaching the Ryukyu Islands.
At its peak near Okinawa, the storm produced sustained winds of around 67-70 mph (108–113 km/h), with stronger gusts exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h). Forecasters also warned of flooding, landslides, and coastal storm surges.
The storm passed close to or directly over parts of Okinawa on June 1-2, bringing torrential rainfall and rough seas. Authorities issued warnings for residents in low-lying and mountainous areas, where the risk of flash flooding and landslides increased significantly.
As of June 3, Jangmi is tracking toward mainland Japan. Hundreds of flights have been canceled, particularly in southwestern Japan, and transportation disruptions are being reported across several regions. Japanese authorities continue to monitor rainfall totals, which could exceed 200-300 mm in some areas.
While the storm has weakened somewhat from its strongest phase, meteorologists caution that heavy rainfall remains the primary threat. Even weakening tropical systems can trigger severe flooding and landslides, especially where soils are already saturated.
