Europe’s second-longest river has spent much of this summer making headlines for unusually low water levels.
Along stretches of the Danube, drought has exposed wartime shipwrecks, submerged structures and forgotten pieces of history hidden beneath its waters for decades.
Now, the shrinking river has revealed something far older.
Near the Bulgarian city of Ruse, close to the Danube‘s southern bank, palaeontologists have uncovered the remains of what is believed to be a prehistoric mammoth.
The discovery emerged after exceptionally low water levels exposed sediments that had remained undisturbed for thousands of years, offering scientists a rare opportunity to study one of the giants of the Ice Age.
While researchers are continuing to examine the find, the discovery has already attracted significant scientific interest and serves as another reminder that Europe’s great rivers often preserve remarkable traces of its distant past.
The Danube: A River That Preserves History
The Danube has long functioned as more than a trade route connecting Central Europe with the Black Sea.
Its floodplains and sediment layers have preserved archaeological sites, ancient settlements, Roman artefacts and the remains of prehistoric animals that once roamed Europe during the last Ice Age.
Periods of prolonged drought occasionally lower the river enough to expose discoveries that would otherwise remain buried beneath metres of mud and sediment.
This summer’s exceptionally low water levels have once again transformed parts of the river into an open-air archive spanning thousands of years.
Mammoths Once Roamed Across Much of Europe
Although many people associate mammoths with the frozen landscapes of Siberia, their range was far more extensive.
Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) inhabited enormous areas stretching from present-day Spain and the British Isles across Central Europe, the Balkans and the Eurasian steppes, all the way to Alaska and northern Canada via the ancient Bering Land Bridge.
They thrived during the Ice Age, when much of northern Europe consisted of vast grasslands known as the “mammoth steppe” – one of the largest ecosystems ever to exist.
The Balkans were also part of this prehistoric landscape, making discoveries in countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia scientifically significant.
Giants of the Ice Age
Adult woolly mammoths typically stood between 2.7 and 3.4 metres (9-11 feet) at the shoulder, although some males grew even larger.
They weighed between four and eight tonnes – comparable to modern African elephants – but differed in several important ways.
Their thick, shaggy coats, small ears and impressive curved tusks helped them survive harsh Ice Age climates.
Rather than being fearsome predators, mammoths were herbivores.
They spent most of their lives grazing on grasses, sedges, shrubs and other vegetation, consuming well over 100 kilograms of plant material every day.
Their enormous tusks were used for digging through snow to reach food, defending themselves and competing for mates.
Why Did Mammoths Disappear?
Scientists believe mammoths vanished through a combination of climate change and human activity.
As the last Ice Age ended around 11,700 years ago, rising temperatures transformed the vast grasslands they depended on into forests and wetlands.
At the same time, expanding human populations increasingly hunted mammoths for meat, hides and bones.
Neither factor alone fully explains their disappearance.
Most researchers now believe that environmental change combined with hunting gradually pushed mammoth populations into decline until they disappeared from mainland Eurasia roughly 10,000 years ago.
Remarkably, isolated populations survived much longer.
Small groups of woolly mammoths continued living on Russia’s Wrangel Island until around 4,000 years ago – meaning they were still alive while the ancient Egyptians were building pyramids.
Remarkable Mammoth Discoveries Around the World
The Bulgarian discovery joins a long list of extraordinary mammoth finds made across the Northern Hemisphere.
Some of the world’s best-preserved specimens have been recovered from Siberia, where permanently frozen ground has protected entire animals for tens of thousands of years.
In several cases, scientists have discovered intact skin, muscles, internal organs and even stomach contents.
Alaska and Canada’s Yukon Territory have also yielded numerous mammoth skeletons, often uncovered as melting permafrost and retreating glaciers expose ancient sediments.
In Europe, mammoth remains have been found in countries including Germany, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania and the United Kingdom.
Some of the most remarkable discoveries include prehistoric dwellings built from mammoth bones in present-day Ukraine, illustrating how early humans used every part of these enormous animals.
More recently, climate change has accelerated the melting of Arctic permafrost, leading to an increasing number of remarkable discoveries across northern Russia and Canada.
While these finds provide invaluable scientific information, they also highlight the rapid environmental changes taking place in the world’s coldest regions.
What Makes the Bulgarian Discovery Important?
Every newly discovered mammoth adds another piece to the puzzle of Europe’s prehistoric ecosystems.
Finds along the Danube are particularly valuable because they help scientists reconstruct the ancient environments that once existed across southeastern Europe – an area that remains less extensively studied than Siberia or northern Europe.
The remains near Ruse also serve as a reminder that Bulgaria’s rich archaeological heritage extends far beyond its Thracian treasures and Roman cities.
Long before people settled along the Danube, Ice Age giants roamed these same floodplains.
A River That Keeps Revealing Its Past
This summer, the Danube has exposed shipwrecks from the Second World War, forgotten structures and now the remains of an animal that disappeared thousands of years before recorded history began.
As drought continues to lower one of Europe’s great rivers, the discoveries emerging from its banks span not decades or centuries – but entire geological ages.
Sometimes, the most remarkable stories are not hidden in museums. They have simply been waiting beneath the riverbed.
