Authorities in Rio de Janeiro warned residents to stay away from parts of the city’s ocean-side cycleway after powerful waves and hazardous sea conditions struck the coastline.

Officials temporarily closed sections of the popular Tim Maia coastal path, warning that waves could exceed 8 feet (2.5 meters) and pose a serious danger to pedestrians and cyclists.

Despite the warnings, several cyclists and runners were seen climbing over safety barriers to continue exercising along the waterfront.

Videos shared on social media showed groups carrying bicycles across blocked entrances while rough waves crashed against the pathway nearby.

The footage quickly sparked criticism online, with many accusing the individuals of ignoring public safety rules and putting rescue workers at risk.

Local authorities defended the closures, saying the barriers were necessary due to the risk of strong ocean swells flooding the pathway. Emergency officials urged residents to respect safety measures until weather conditions improved.

The incident once again highlighted the challenges Rio faces during periods of extreme coastal weather, especially along scenic routes that remain popular with tourists, runners, and cyclists even during dangerous conditions.
