Brazil is one of the largest countries in the world, covering an area of more than 8.5 million square kilometers.

With its diverse landscapes, tropical beaches, rainforests, mountains, colonial towns, and vibrant cities, many Brazilians find plenty of travel opportunities without ever crossing an international border.

Numbers Are Shocking: Only About 3% of Journeys Were International

According to data from Brazil’s National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Turismo), approximately 97% of all trips taken by Brazilians in 2023 were domestic trips within Brazil.

Only about 3% were international journeys. More than 20 million Brazilians traveled to destinations inside the country, generating around R$20 billion for the domestic tourism industry.

Several factors explain this trend. First, Brazil’s enormous size means that traveling from one region to another can feel like visiting a completely different country.

The Amazon rainforest, the beaches of the Northeast, the wetlands of the Pantanal, and the urban centers of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro offer vastly different experiences.

Second, international travel can be expensive for many Brazilian families. Airfare, accommodation, passports, and currency exchange rates often make foreign trips less accessible than domestic vacations.

Domestic tourism is usually more affordable and requires less planning. Brazilians are used to receiving exceptional value for their money within Brazil, so a trip to North America or Europe, for instance, might sometimes fall short of their expectations.

Another reason is cultural familiarity. Traveling within Brazil eliminates language barriers and allows people to stay connected with local customs, food, and social networks. Many trips are also made to visit relatives and friends living in other parts of the country.

Although international travel by Brazilians has been growing in recent years, domestic tourism continues to dominate. Brazil’s vast territory, rich natural attractions, and economic factors make traveling within the country the preferred choice for most Brazilians.
