For many travelers, crystal-clear sea water is one of the most important parts of a summer holiday. According to the latest data from the European Environment Agency (EEA), Cyprus has the cleanest bathing waters in Europe in 2024.

An impressive 99.2% of the island’s bathing sites were rated as having “excellent” water quality, placing Cyprus at the top of the European ranking.

The report analyzed more than 22,000 bathing locations across Europe, including beaches, coastal areas, rivers, and lakes.

Water quality was evaluated based on the presence of bacteria such as E. coli and intestinal enterococci, which can indicate pollution from sewage or waste. Waters classified as “excellent” are considered very safe for swimming and recreation.

A Matter of Geography and Environmental Excellence

One of the main reasons for Cyprus’s success is its geographical and environmental conditions. The island has many coastal bathing areas with limited industrial pollution and relatively low rainfall, which reduces the amount of contaminated runoff entering the sea.

In addition, Cyprus has invested in modern wastewater treatment systems and environmental monitoring programs that help maintain high standards for public beaches.

Cyprus is also famous for its Blue Flag beaches, a certification awarded to beaches that meet strict environmental, educational, safety, and water quality standards.

Popular destinations such as Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Paphos attract millions of tourists every year thanks to their clean waters and beautiful coastlines.

Close Behind: Several Other Nations with Near-Perfect Scores

The EEA report also showed that several other countries performed very well, including Bulgaria, Greece, Austria, and Croatia, where more than 95% of bathing waters were rated excellent. However, Cyprus remained the clear leader in Europe.

Clean bathing waters are not only important for tourism but also for public health and environmental sustainability.

High water quality helps protect marine ecosystems, supports local economies, and provides safe recreational spaces for residents and visitors alike.

As climate change and pollution continue to threaten marine environments around the world, Cyprus demonstrates how environmental management and regular monitoring can help preserve natural resources.

Its leading position in Europe’s bathing water rankings makes the island one of the best destinations for beach lovers seeking safe and pristine waters.
