On May 7, 2026, the Australian state of Victoria experienced a sharp and dramatic weather change as powerful Antarctic air masses swept across southeastern Australia.

The cold outbreak brought freezing temperatures, strong winds, hail, and even snowfall to several elevated regions, marking one of the coldest days of the year so far.

The sudden arrival of polar air followed an unusually warm start to May. Just days earlier, temperatures across Victoria and neighboring states were significantly above seasonal averages.

Meteorologists from Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology warned that the rapid transition would feel like a “shock to the system” for residents who had become accustomed to mild autumn weather.

As the Antarctic front moved northward from the Southern Ocean, snow began falling in parts of the Victorian Alps and several hill regions surrounding Melbourne.

Areas such as Mount Dandenong, Marysville, and the Yarra Ranges reported light snow showers, while alpine resorts including Mt Hotham and Mt Buller recorded sub-zero temperatures and accumulating snow.

Melbourne itself endured its coldest day of 2026 so far, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise above 14°C (57°F).

Strong southerly winds and rain made conditions feel even colder across the city and much of the state. According to weather analysts, temperatures in some regions were between 2°C and 8°C below the seasonal average.

Weather experts explained that the outbreak was caused by a strong polar front connected to the Southern Ocean circulation around Antarctica.

These systems occasionally push deep into southeastern Australia during autumn and winter, bringing icy maritime air masses capable of producing snow at relatively low elevations.

Although the cold snap was expected to weaken after several days, forecasters predicted continued chilly and unsettled weather across Victoria throughout the weekend.
