For decades, temperatures above 40°C were considered exceptional in Europe, largely confined to parts of southern Spain or Greece.
Today, however, extreme heat is becoming increasingly common across the continent. What was once a rare weather anomaly is gradually turning into a recurring feature of European summers.
In recent years, countries across Southern and Central Europe have repeatedly recorded temperatures above 45°C.
Even more striking is the spread of intense heat into regions traditionally known for their mild climates.
During recent heatwaves, parts of the Baltic states, including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, have experienced temperatures exceeding 30-35°C, with forecasts occasionally approaching the 40°C mark. Such conditions would have been almost unimaginable only a few decades ago.
Climate scientists warn that Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average, making it the fastest-warming continent on Earth.
As greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise, the likelihood of unprecedented heat extremes also increases.
Several climate studies suggest that exceeding 50°C somewhere in Europe within the coming decades is no longer a question of “if,” but increasingly of “when.”
Heat Is More Than Just High Daytime Temperatures
While headlines often focus on record daytime highs, experts emphasize that warm nights are becoming the more dangerous aspect of heatwaves.
Normally, the human body relies on cooler nighttime temperatures to recover from daytime heat stress. When temperatures remain above 25-30°C overnight, known as tropical nights, the body struggles to cool itself.
This can lead to cumulative heat stress, dehydration, sleep disruption, cardiovascular strain, and a significantly higher risk of illness or death, particularly among older adults and people with chronic health conditions.
In many European cities, the urban heat island effect makes nighttime conditions even worse. Concrete, asphalt, and buildings absorb heat throughout the day and slowly release it after sunset, preventing temperatures from dropping sufficiently.
A New Climate Reality
Europe has already experienced several record-breaking summers. In 2021, Sicily recorded 48.8°C, currently recognized by the World Meteorological Organization as Europe’s highest reliably measured temperature.
Since then, numerous countries have broken their national heat records, and heatwaves have become longer, more frequent, and more intense.
Climate models consistently project that if global warming continues along its current trajectory, temperatures that were once considered extraordinary will become increasingly common.
In some parts of southern Europe, 50°C may eventually become a realistic possibility during exceptional heat events.
Adapting to Extreme Heat
Governments and cities are increasingly being forced to rethink how they prepare for hotter summers.
Measures include expanding urban green spaces, improving heat warning systems, redesigning buildings for passive cooling, and protecting vulnerable populations during prolonged heatwaves.
At the same time, scientists stress that adaptation alone will not be enough. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains essential to limit the severity and frequency of future extreme heat events.
The question is no longer whether Europe is warming – it clearly is. The more pressing question is how quickly societies can adapt to a climate that is changing faster than many expected.
Extreme Heat Often Sets the Stage for Violent Storms
Extreme heat is not the only consequence of a warming climate. Prolonged periods of exceptionally high temperatures are often followed by more intense thunderstorms and severe weather events.
As scorching air masses collide with cooler incoming fronts, the atmosphere becomes highly unstable, providing the energy needed for powerful storm development.
These systems can produce torrential rainfall, large hail, damaging winds, and even tornadoes in some regions.
A warmer atmosphere is also capable of holding around 7% more moisture for every 1°C of warming, increasing the potential for extreme downpours and flash flooding.
In other words, the end of a heatwave does not necessarily bring relief – it can instead mark the beginning of another type of weather hazard, one driven by the enormous amount of heat and moisture accumulated in the atmosphere.
