Sicily is experiencing one of the most intense heatwaves of the summer, with temperatures climbing above 46°C in parts of the island, prompting health warnings and advice for both residents and visitors.
According to Italian weather reports, the highest temperature recorded was 46.4°C / 115.52°F in Libertinia, in the province of Catania, as a powerful subtropical high-pressure system continues to push exceptionally hot air from North Africa across southern Italy.
Popular tourist destinations, including Catania, Palermo, Syracuse and the Aeolian Islands, are facing extreme daytime heat, with authorities urging people to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours, stay hydrated and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
The scorching conditions have also increased the risk of wildfires across Sicily, while emergency services remain on alert as temperatures are expected to stay well above seasonal averages in the coming days.
Despite the heat, airports, ferries and major tourist attractions continue to operate normally, although visitors are encouraged to plan sightseeing for the early morning or late evening hours.
Meteorologists note that southern Italy has become increasingly vulnerable to prolonged heatwaves in recent years, with Sicily regularly recording some of Europe’s highest summer temperatures.
If you are planning to visit Sicily, drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., wear light clothing, a hat and sunscreen, check local weather forecasts before planning excursions, especially inland.
