A powerful tornado swept through parts of southern France on Monday, leaving a trail of damaged homes, injured residents and widespread power disruption in the Aude department near Carcassonne.
The event occurred on August, 24, as severe thunderstorms developed over an atmosphere still carrying substantial heat and moisture after an unusually warm summer.
The tornado struck the area around the villages of Pomas and Verzeille, south of Carcassonne, during the late afternoon.
Authorities reported that around 300 homes were damaged in Pomas alone, with roofs torn away, windows shattered and some buildings partially collapsed.
Initial reports varied as emergency services assessed the destruction, but later updates said 39 people were injured, including two in critical condition.
Video recorded near Verzeille showed a rotating funnel descending from a violent supercell thunderstorm – a highly organised storm capable of producing destructive wind, large hail, intense rainfall and, in rare cases, tornadoes.
Winds in the wider Aude area reached up to 117 km/h, while the storm also knocked out electricity supplies and blocked roads with fallen trees and debris.
Although France experiences tornadoes every year, destructive tornadoes linked to mature supercell storms remain relatively uncommon, particularly in areas better known for Mediterranean heat, drought and summer wildfire risk.
Meteorological conditions on the day were nevertheless favourable for severe convection: warm, humid air near the surface interacted with colder air aloft and strong wind changes with height, allowing thunderstorms to become organised and rotate.
The tornado followed a summer marked by exceptional heat across large parts of Europe. Prolonged high temperatures do not automatically cause tornadoes, and no single event can be attributed solely to a heatwave.
However, sustained heat can leave the lower atmosphere warmer and, where moisture is available, increase the energy that thunderstorms can draw upon.
When an advancing disturbance or cooler air mass collides with that unstable air, the result can be a rapid transition from oppressive heat to violent storms.
This late-summer pattern is particularly important across southern Europe. The Mediterranean remains warm well into autumn, providing moisture to the atmosphere, while incoming Atlantic systems and colder upper-level air increasingly begin to affect France, Italy and the Balkans.
That contrast can support torrential rain, large hail, severe straight-line winds and occasionally rotating storms.
It does not mean tornadoes will become routine, but it does underline why residents and local authorities need to treat severe-thunderstorm alerts seriously.
In Aude, the tornado formed while the department was under an orange-level thunderstorm warning. Forecasters had warned of intense rainfall, hail, strong gusts and the possibility of rotating phenomena across parts of southern France.
More than 30 mm of rain fell in one hour at Castelnaudary, illustrating how quickly severe storms can deliver dangerous weather impacts over a small area.
For communities across Europe, the lesson is not that every hot summer will end with a tornado. Rather, increasingly volatile weather patterns make preparedness more important during the transition from summer into autumn.
Monitoring official weather warnings, avoiding travel during severe storms, moving indoors away from windows and never sheltering under trees or in unsecured structures can make a major difference when a fast-developing storm approaches.
