UK Gripped by Historic June Heatwave as Temperatures Surge Toward 40°C

LONDON, June 23, 2026 – The United Kingdom is experiencing one of the most extraordinary heatwaves in its recorded history, with temperatures already breaking long-standing June records and forecasters warning that the worst is yet to come.

The UK Met Office has issued a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning for parts of England and Wales, citing a significant risk to life and widespread disruption as an exceptionally hot and humid air mass settles over the country. 

The warning, in force for Wednesday and Thursday, is only the second red-level heat alert issued since the warning system was introduced. 

Recent forecasts indicate temperatures could reach between 38°C and 40°C, levels rarely seen in the British Isles and unprecedented for June.

The heat intensified rapidly at the start of the week. On Monday, temperatures climbed to around 34°C across southern England, marking one of the hottest June days in decades. 

Conditions became even more severe on Tuesday, when temperatures in the Greater London area reportedly reached 36°C, while readings close to 34°C were observed in Reading and other locations across southeast England.

Meteorologists confirmed that the country’s previous June temperature record of 35.6°C, set in 1976, has now been surpassed, making Tuesday the hottest June day ever recorded in the United Kingdom. 

The Met Office had warned in advance that the long-standing benchmark was likely to fall as the heatwave intensified. 

Forecasters say the most dangerous phase of the event is still ahead. A powerful “heat dome” stretching across Western Europe is expected to strengthen over Britain on Wednesday and Thursday, allowing temperatures to rise even further. 

Many weather models project widespread highs of 38°C to 39°C, while isolated locations could approach or even reach the symbolic 40°C threshold, bringing the country close to the all-time UK temperature record of 40.3°C set during the historic July 2022 heatwave.  

Beyond the daytime heat, authorities are increasingly concerned about unusually high humidity levels and exceptionally warm nights. 

Health officials have warned of so-called “tropical nights”, particularly in urban areas, where temperatures may remain above 20°C throughout the night. 

Such conditions prevent buildings from cooling down and can significantly increase health risks, especially for older people, young children, and those with underlying medical conditions.

The situation is especially challenging because most homes, schools, and public buildings in the UK were not designed to cope with prolonged periods of extreme heat and lack air conditioning. 

Hospitals, transport networks, schools, and energy infrastructure are already reporting significant strain as demand for cooling and emergency services increases.  

Rail operators have introduced speed restrictions, some schools have shortened teaching hours or closed early, and local authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the hottest part of the day. 

Public health agencies continue to advise people to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.  

Relief is expected to arrive only gradually. Forecasts suggest the heat dome will begin shifting eastward by Friday, allowing somewhat cooler Atlantic air to move into parts of the country. 

Temperatures are expected to ease over the weekend, although many areas may still remain well above seasonal averages. 

Until then, meteorologists warn that the UK remains in the grip of a potentially historic weather event whose full impact is yet to be felt.
