The ‘Flesh-Eating’ Bacteria Is Spreading Along America’s Warm Coasts. Here’s What’s Really Happening in the Gulf of Mexico

A naturally occurring bacteria is thriving in warm coastal waters, and health officials are warning that summer heat, hurricanes and warming seas could make the threat harder to ignore.

For millions of people, the Gulf Coast means beaches, fishing trips, seafood and long summer days in the water. But there is another, much less welcome feature of the Gulf during the hottest months of the year – Vibrio vulnificus.

The bacterium has been dubbed the “flesh-eating bacteria” by news outlets because it can cause devastating wound infections, including necrotizing fasciitis. 

The nickname is frightening but the reality is much more complicated, and, for a relatively small group of people, potentially much more dangerous.

Vibrio vulnificus naturally lives in warm saltwater and brackish water, particularly during the warmer months. 

It can enter the body through an open wound or through eating raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters. And the Gulf of Mexico is one of the places where the conditions are particularly favorable.

This Isn’t a New Gulf Coast Problem

The bacteria didn’t suddenly appear because of this year’s headlines. Vibrio vulnificus has been recognized as a human pathogen for decades.

CDC surveillance for Vibrio infections began in the late 1980s in cooperation with Gulf Coast states including Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. 

By the early 1990s, federal health officials were already documenting serious and sometimes fatal V. vulnificus infections associated with Gulf Coast seafood.

In Florida alone, CDC recorded 125 infections between 1981 and 1992, including 44 deaths. The cases occurred mainly from spring through fall, with infections peaking between May and October. 

So this isn’t an emerging bacteria that has suddenly invaded the Gulf. It has been part of the Gulf Coast ecosystem for generations.

What is changing is the amount of attention, and potentially the conditions under which it can thrive.

The Gulf Is Almost a Perfect Environment for Vibrio

Vibrio bacteria prefer warm coastal water. They also do particularly well in brackish environments, where freshwater mixes with seawater.

That makes the Gulf of Mexico an ideal setting. The coastline contains extensive shallow waters, estuaries and bays, while enormous rivers – including the Mississippi – pour freshwater into the Gulf.

During the summer, water temperatures rise and Vibrio populations can increase. That is why infections tend to be seasonal.

The hottest months are also the months when people are most likely to be swimming, fishing, boating and eating seafood. It’s a combination that creates opportunity for the bacteria, and exposure for people.

It Doesn’t Actually “Eat” People

This is probably the most important thing to understand about the headline-grabbing nickname. Vibrio vulnificus does not literally hunt down human flesh and eat it.

In some infections, however, the bacteria can cause severe tissue destruction. The resulting condition can include necrotizing fasciitis, in which tissue around an infected wound rapidly dies.

CDC itself acknowledges the media’s use of the term “flesh-eating bacteria,” while noting that V. vulnificus is only one of several bacteria that can cause necrotizing fasciitis. 

In severe cases, patients may require intensive care, extensive surgery or amputation. And the infection can progress extraordinarily quickly.

CDC estimates that about 1 in 5 people with V. vulnificus infection die, sometimes within one or two days after becoming ill. That is why doctors treat suspected severe infections as medical emergencies.

A Tiny Cut Can Be Enough

One of the most unsettling aspects of the bacteria is how little exposure may be required. Someone doesn’t necessarily need to swallow seawater.

A person fishing, swimming or wading can have bacteria enter through an open wound.

That wound doesn’t have to look dramatic. A small cut, scrape or abrasion can potentially provide an entry point. 

The CDC specifically advises people to avoid exposing open wounds or recent surgery to saltwater or brackish water and to wash wounds thoroughly with soap and clean running water after exposure. 

There is another route. Raw or undercooked shellfish. Oysters are particularly important because they filter large quantities of water as they feed and can concentrate Vibrio from their surrounding environment.

And an oyster contaminated with Vibrio won’t necessarily look, smell or taste different.

Cooking it properly is what kills the bacteria. 

The Gulf Coast Has Seen Some Dramatic Spikes

The scale can change dramatically after major storms. Hurricanes can push seawater inland and spread contaminated coastal water across areas that are normally dry.

That creates a particularly dangerous situation for anyone walking through floodwater with cuts or injuries.

Hurricane Ian provided a striking example. After the Category 4 hurricane struck southwest Florida in September 2022, health officials identified 38 culture-confirmed Vibrio cases associated with the storm, including 29 caused by V. vulnificus.

There were 11 deaths among the 38 cases. The number of cases in the affected counties was roughly 11 times higher than the five-year median for the period. 

Hurricane Katrina produced a similar warning. CDC identified 22 Vibrio infections and five deaths associated with the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane. 

The lesson is straightforward: A hurricane doesn’t have to carry the bacteria with it. It can simply move the water, and the bacteria already living in it, into places where people are suddenly exposed.

The Numbers Are Still Small – But the Risk Isn’t Imaginary

This is where some coverage can become misleading. Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare compared with common summer illnesses. The vast majority of people who swim in the Gulf will not develop a life-threatening infection.

But the consequences for the people who do become severely infected can be catastrophic.

CDC’s 2024 surveillance recorded 222 reported V. vulnificus cases across 29 jurisdictions.

Of those, 138 – about 62% – were reported by Gulf Coast states.

Another 57 cases came from Atlantic Coast states. Those numbers also shouldn’t be interpreted as the total number of infections in the United States.

Surveillance captures reported cases, and reporting practices vary. Still, the geographic pattern is striking. The Gulf remains the country’s most important regional hotspot.

Louisiana’s Recent Numbers Show Why Officials Are Paying Attention

The concern isn’t purely theoretical. In 2025, Louisiana reported 17 V. vulnificus cases and four deaths, compared with a historical average of roughly seven cases and one death per year over the previous decade.

Florida reported 13 cases and four deaths at the time of the summer health warnings. Major US outlets including ABC News and The Washington Post reported on the unusual activity. 

Those figures illustrate why a disease that remains rare nationally can still become a major public-health concern in individual coastal communities.

And It’s Not Just a Gulf Problem Anymore

The Gulf of Mexico may be the best-known American environment for V. vulnificus but the bacteria isn’t confined there. Cases occur along the Atlantic Coast, including farther north than many people might expect.

CDC data show that in 2024, Atlantic Coast states accounted for 26% of reported V. vulnificus cases, compared with 62% in Gulf Coast states. 

And researchers have documented a striking change over time. A study published in Scientific Reports found that between 1988 and 2018, reported V. vulnificus wound infections in the eastern United States increased eightfold, while the northern limit of reported cases shifted northward by roughly 48 kilometers per year.

The study projected further expansion under continued warming. That doesn’t mean every northern beach is suddenly dangerous. It does mean that water temperature can change the geographic range in which Vibrio bacteria can thrive.

New York and New Jersey Are Part of the Bigger Story

The northern expansion is particularly notable because it moves the conversation beyond the traditional Gulf Coast states.

Scientists have increasingly detected Vibrio in warmer coastal waters farther north. The implication is not that the Northeast will suddenly resemble Louisiana.

Instead, warmer summers can create longer windows of suitable conditions for bacteria that previously had much more limited opportunities to thrive.

Climate change therefore becomes part of the conversation. Not because climate change “creates” Vibrio vulnificus. It doesn’t. The bacteria already exists. But warmer coastal waters can make its habitat more favorable.

The Same Story Is Playing Out in Europe

The phenomenon isn’t uniquely American. Vibrio vulnificus is also found in other warm and brackish coastal environments around the world.

That includes parts of Asia, where Vibrio infections associated with seafood and coastal exposure have long been recognized. And Europe has its own emerging story.

Scientists have detected V. vulnificus in the Baltic Sea, a particularly interesting environment because it is much less salty than the open ocean.

A 2024 study found that temperature, salinity and sediment conditions were important drivers of V. vulnificus prevalence in Baltic coastal waters. 

Another major European food-safety assessment concluded that temperature and salinity are among the most important environmental factors controlling Vibrio abundance, and warned that coastal warming and extreme weather could increase the occurrence of relevant Vibrio species, particularly in low-salinity and brackish environments. 

That makes the Baltic an important reminder: You don’t need a tropical beach for Vibrio to become a problem. You need the right environmental conditions.

Why Climate Change Is Getting Pulled Into the Story

Scientists are increasingly interested in Vibrio because it can act as a biological indicator of changing coastal conditions. Warmer water gives the bacteria more opportunities to multiply.

Longer periods of warm weather can extend the season during which exposure is possible. And extreme weather can push coastal water into populated areas.

A warmer ocean therefore doesn’t automatically mean that everyone swimming at the beach is suddenly at risk.

But it can mean more places, more time and more opportunities for exposure. That is why researchers are watching the bacteria as coastal temperatures rise.

Who Needs to Be Most Careful?

Anyone can become infected. But the risk of severe illness is much higher for people with certain underlying conditions.

CDC identifies liver disease, including cirrhosis, as an important risk factor, along with conditions or treatments that weaken the immune system. People with other chronic illnesses can also face a higher risk of severe disease. 

This is particularly important because a person who appears perfectly healthy after swimming may not realize that a wound infection is becoming dangerous until symptoms begin to escalate.

What Travelers Should Actually Do

The good news is that avoiding the most common routes of exposure is relatively straightforward. If you have an open cut or wound, don’t expose it to warm seawater or brackish water.

If you do get a wound while swimming, fishing or handling seafood, wash it thoroughly with soap and clean water.

And if you are in a high-risk group, consider being particularly cautious around warm coastal waters. The other major precaution is at the dinner table.

Don’t eat raw or undercooked oysters or other shellfish if you want to eliminate the foodborne risk. Lemon juice, hot sauce and alcohol won’t make contaminated oysters safe. Proper cooking will. 

The Most Important Warning Sign

The dangerous part isn’t simply having a cut after swimming. The warning sign is rapidly worsening symptoms.

Severe pain, swelling, redness, blistering, fever, chills or rapidly changing skin around a wound after exposure to coastal water should not be treated as a normal scrape.

CDC advises seeking medical attention immediately when symptoms of a serious Vibrio wound or bloodstream infection appear. 

Early recognition matters because treatment can involve antibiotics, surgery and sometimes removal of infected tissue.

The Bottom Line

The Gulf of Mexico isn’t suddenly filled with a mysterious new “flesh-eating” monster. Vibrio vulnificus has been living in Gulf waters for decades, and probably far longer.

What has changed is the combination of factors drawing more attention to it: exceptionally warm coastal waters, growing awareness of severe infections, hurricanes and flooding that can spread coastal water inland, and evidence that warming conditions are helping Vibrio establish itself farther north.

The individual risk for a healthy beachgoer remains low. But the consequences of a serious infection can be extraordinarily high.

So if you’re heading to the Gulf this summer, the advice isn’t to stay out of the water. It’s simpler than that: Don’t swim with an open wound, cook your oysters, and don’t ignore a rapidly worsening infection after coastal-water exposure.

The Gulf’s “flesh-eating bacteria” story is frightening. But understanding what the bacteria actually is, and how it reaches people, is far more useful than the nickname.
