However, in 1986, the town served as a filming location for the highly successful Chinese movie Hibiscus Town (Furong Zhen in Chinese).
The film became a cultural phenomenon throughout China, and its popularity was so great that the town eventually adopted the name Furong, which means “Hibiscus.”
Easy to Combine With China’s “Avatar Mountains”
Another reason for Furong’s growing popularity is its location. The town sits relatively close to the famous Zhangjiajie scenic area, whose towering sandstone pillars are widely believed to have inspired the floating mountains featured in James Cameron’s blockbuster film Avatar.
Today, a high-speed rail connection allows travelers to journey between Zhangjiajie and Furong in less than 30 minutes, making it easy to visit both destinations during the same trip.
